I also think that you should try and find a grocery store that sells dried herbs and spices in bulk so you can just buy a little bit and rotate them more often.

Herbs and spices last much longer than the experation date if as you said you keep the in a cool dark place.

I dont like “Spice Racks”… They look soooo tacky and should never be out on open display!!!
ALL my herbs are tucked safely away – out of sight!! – and sniffing is one option I tend to use to check the freshness of it!!
You light up my day!! – Thank You!!

Nice one, David. I keep mine in a drawer and always sniff before using. The ones I use most, I buy in larger containers, but the ones I seldom use I like to buy small amounts in the bulk section of the grocery. :-)

is that a possible followup?

I always keep my herbs in my cupboard:)
However, when I’m using the dried stuff ( I prefer fresh!), I always crush them in the palm of my hand before I put it in my caserole. I find that this helps the flavour to come out more:)

If you must have a spice rack, buy the ones w/the doors on the front..that way they stay in a cool dark place..just dont hang one over the stove area, lol.

to keep fresh herbs for longer there’s 2 things you can do. The quickest and easiest thing to do is wrap them in a paper towel and put them in an air-tight ziploc bag and put them in the fridge. I’ve kept parsley and cilantro fresh for almost 2 weeks using this method. The other way is to keep a small container of water in the fridge. bundle your herbs together and drop the stems into the water, then drape a pplastic bag over the top. It’s bulky but can extend their shelf-life for up to 4 weeks.

But, of course, the absolute best way to keep fresh herbs is to just grow them yourself. Most grow easily in small pots and require almost no maintenance. I grow basil, thyme, flat-leaf parsley, oregano, and lavender in small clay pots by my kitchen window.
